Childhood

Narges Mohammadi was born on 21 April 1972, in Zanjan, Iran. She grew up in the cities of Qorveh, Karaj, and Oshnaviyeh.

Narges Mohammadi, a brilliant student from Iran, began her human rights activism at a young age. Inspired by her mother’s weekly visits to prisoners, she and her brother would witness the news of executions every day. These experiences shaped her into a passionate advocate for human rights and justice.

Struggle & Challenges

Nagers Mohammadi was student of Imam Khomeini International University, from where she studied Physics  and obtained the degree to become a professional engineer. During her university years, she became involved in the student movement for democracy and human rights. She was arrested and imprisoned several times for her activism. She was removed from mountain climbing club due to her activities participation for human right advocacy work.

After graduating from university, Narges Mohammadi worked as a journalist for several reformist newspapers. She also published a book of political essays titled “The Reforms, the Strategy and the Tactics.”

In 2003, Narges Mohammadi joined the Defenders of Human Rights Center (DHRC), a prominent human rights organization in Iran. She later became the DHRC’s vice president.

Narges Mohammadi’s work at the DHRC has focused on a wide range of human rights issues, including the rights of women, prisoners, and religious minorities. She has also been a vocal critic of the Iranian government’s crackdown.

Narges Mohammadi has been arrested and imprisoned numerous times for her human rights work. Her first arrest was from her university for writing an article on women right in student news paper. Since then she is arrested number times for her work like, her criticisms of the Iranian government, “acting against the national security, membership of the DHRC and propaganda against the regime”, “founding an illegal group” in reference to Legam,  protesting for women in prison and death penalty etc.  

She was active in the jail also and protested report by Mohammadi detailing the sexual and physical abuse of detained women. She submitted a detail report on the condition of women in prison at Evin Prison

She protested against Solitary confinement in her book name ‘White Torture’.

Narges Mohammadi is at present also in jail Tehran’s Evin Prison. Her half of the life is spent is jail sacrificing her personal life and family life.

Narges Mohammadi is married to fellow pro-reform journalist Taghi Rahmani. They have two children, twins Ali and Kiana.

Rahmani was arrested and imprisoned several times for his activism, and he eventually moved to France in 2012. Mohammadi remained in Iran to continue her human rights work, but she has been arrested and imprisoned numerous times as well.

Nagers Mohammadi and her children have been separated for many years. Ali and Kiana now live with their father in France.
