Early Age

Suman kalyanpur, born on January 28, 1937, in Dhaka, Bangladesh, comes from a Saraswat Brahmin family. Her father held a high position at the Central Bank of India and was stationed in Dhaka for several years. She was the eldest of five siblings, consisting of four sisters and one brother. After some time, her family moved to Mumbai, where she began her musical training.

Initially, she received vocal training from family friend Pandit Keshav Rao Bhole, while pursuing her studies in painting at the prestigious Sir J.J. School of Arts. As her interest in music grew, she started taking professional training from renowned trainers such as Ustad Khan, Abdul Rehman Khan, and Guruji Master Navran.

Career

Suman kalyanpur Lata mangeshkar were a highly successful singer, often compared to Lata Mangeshkar, and has recorded numerous evergreen songs throughout her career. Her first public performance was for All India Radio in 1952, but her family was not supportive of her pursuing a career in music.

However, she managed to showcase her talent to the world and eventually got her break in the Marathi film industry with the movie Shukrachi Chandni in 1953. This led to opportunities in Hindi films, and she sang for her first Hindi film, Mangu, in 1954.Later her family started supporting her and her father accompany her for her recording

Suman kalyanpur sang many beautiful songs in Hindi films, including Darwaza, Aar Paar, Miyan Bibi Razi (1960), Baat Ek Raat Ki (1962), Dil Ek Mandir (1963), Dil Hi To Hai (1963), Shagoon (1964), Jahan Ara (1964), Sanjh Aur Savera (1964), Noor Jehan (1967), Saathi (1968), and Pakeezah (1971).

She sang for renowned composers like Shankar Jaikishan, Roshan, Madan Mohan, S. D. Burman, N Datta, Hemant Kumar, Chitragupta, Naushad, S. N. Tripathi, Ghulam Mohammed, Kalyanji-Anandji, and Laxmikant–Pyarelal, singing the most songs for Shankar Jaikishan and Roshan.

She recorded over 740 movie and non-movie songs, including over 140 duets with Mohammed Rafi in the 1960s. She also sang duets with Lata Mangeshkar, including the popular duet “Kabhi Aaj, Kabhi Kal, Kabhi Parson”, as well as duets with male singers like Manna Dey, Mukesh, Talat Mahmood, and Hemant Kumar.

She has married to a business tycoon Mr. Ramanand Kalyanpur in the 1958. He supported her singing career. The couple was blessed with a daughter named Charul Agni who is settled in the United States after marriage.

She has similar voice like Lata Mangeshkar one of the best Indian singers due to which most of time her voice was mistaken with Lata Mangeshkar.
