Indian origin economist Tharman Shanmugaratnam was born and brought up in Singapore. His father is an Indian citizen setteled in Singapore. Tharman was born in Singapore to a Tamil family from India. Economist
Tharman Shanmugaratnam began his career at the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) in 1987, as Chief Economist and further severed at various positions. He played a crucial role in shaping Singapore’s financial policies and was the Managing Director of MAS from1999 to 2001.
He joined Singapore Administrative Service and served in the Ministry of Education as Senior Deputy Secretary for Policy and rejoined Monetary Authority of Singapore in the year 1999 and resigned in 2001, to adventure new field on politics and participated in the general election as a candidate for People’s Action Party.
Political Career
He made his first appearance in the field of politics with contest of general election as a candidate for People’s Action party which he won against Jurong GRC with 79.75% and was appointed as Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry and Senior Minister of State for Education. Gradually rised in the political field, passing from numerous responsibilities and reached to the position of Finance Minister in year 2007. In 2011, he was appointed as Deputy Prime Minister while retaining his old portfolio of Finance and adding Manpower portfolio.
He stepped down as Minister for Finance in year 2015 after he loss in general election of 2015. He continued his Deputy Prime Minister responsibilities, adding some new responsibility and deleting some. In 2020, he regained his position of parliamentary seat by winning the general election 2020 with 74.62% of vote.
In 2023, he showed his interest for Presidential election and resigned from his all position in the government. In September, he won the presidential election and was announced the ninth President of Singapore.
He has served the Singaporean government at different positions and some important designations. He has served as the Chairman of the MAS (2011–2023), Deputy Chairman of GIC (2019–2023), Chairman of the IAC of EDB (2014–2023), Board of Trustees of the Singapore Indian Development Association (SINDA), Chairs the National Jobs Council and Tharman Co-Chaired several bilateral committees to promote economic and trade relations.
He also managed some roles and responsibilities through International appointments which are Chairman of the IMFC (2011–2014), Chair of the G20 EPG (2017–2023), Chair of the Group of Thirty (2017–2022), Board of Trustees of the WEF (2019–2023), Co-Chair of the G20 HILP (2021–2023), High‑Level Advisory Board on Effective Multilateralism (2022–2023), Co-Chair of the Global Commission on the Economics of Water (2022–2023).
